On the surface, book fairs are about promoting literacy and lifelong reading - valid and worthy goals on their own. However, once the last of the boxes is packed and the last books are delivered to excited readers, the additional benefits of a book fair can linger.
Last week’s GWA Book Fair was hugely successful, not only in terms of sales, but also in developing our own school community and helping to rebuild a Philippine school. A strong sense of school community and concern for others prevailed as our students, teachers, and entire families wound their way among the books and engaged in high-stakes negotiations to make their selections.
In addition, the Book Fair was a fund-raiser for our school initiative, the Philippine School Rebuilding Fund. As a candidate IB school, GWA puts the IBO principles of learning and global citizenship into action. The Book Fair was a wonderful opportunity to promote global citizenry and to experience the rewards of helping others.
Through donations, books sales, and a generous cash donation from The Bookworm Bookshop, GEMS World Academy raised 7,540AED toward the Philippine School Rebuilding Fund. Our goal is to raise 50,000AED. Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in the event’s success.
