PYP (Nursery-Grade 5)
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development.

Assesment using DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)
Teachers in Kindergarten - grade 5 have been assessing students individually using DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment tools. Teachers take small snapshots of how fluently students read, how well they have understood what they have read, and their vocabulary responses. Younger students are assessed on their basic reading skills, such as phonemic awareness (sound to symbol associations), blending (pulling isolated sounds into words), and segmenting (separating words into their component sounds).
2009-2010
Next year, DIBELS assessments will be given three times during the school year (fall, winter, and spring). The tests help to inform teachers, students, and parents of where their students currently fall on the reading continuum and assist teachers with what skills to focus on for groups of students and individuals.
You will be pleased to know, as well, that the Learning Support Department is increasing in size for next school year. Six additional staff members have already been hired to support children’s learning needs.
