Ms Louise O’Keeffe
Assistant Principal Secondary - Personal Development, Welfare and Behaviour
I joined GEMS World Academy - Dubai in 2017, coming from the UK. I graduated from the prestigious London College of Fashion with a degree in Fashion Illustration and before that in Textiles and Fashion Design. I proceeded to work as a freelance illustrator specialising in fashion, beauty and portrait imagery; with clients including Bobby Brown, Triumph, Harvey Nicholas and H&M. It was during this time an interest for teaching arose whilst I was delivering workshops during London Fashion Week to the press and public.
I pursued and gained a PGCE from the University of Greenwich to teach Art and Fashion at college level in conjunction with my freelance profession. My interest in teaching flourished leading me to train in secondary education too. My inspiration was fuelled by my desire to inspire and motivate students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds. Before moving to Dubai, I taught Art and Textiles in London and Surrey, in addition to being a form teacher and Head of House.
During my time at GEMS World Academy – Dubai, I was an MYP Visual Art Teacher and Grade Leader overseeing student welfare, support and the transition from PYP to MYP through the Advisory Programme, and then progressed to Assistant Principal. Student welfare has always been my overarching passion, as we are not only educating students through academic subjects, but training young people on how to thrive as individual human beings by developing their personal, social and emotional intelligence to mould them into well rounded global citizens.
