Mr James Sangster

Middle Years Programme Coordinator

Before embarking upon a career in international education, James earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature and a PGCE in Secondary Education. He then worked in a variety of jobs for a few years, one of which was writing articles for a magazine publishing company in Seattle. During this time and shortly afterwards, James wrote several non-fiction and fiction articles and stories which were subsequently published in magazines. Later, after having worked in public and international schools in Japan and in Germany, he earned a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration.

In addition to living and working in these two countries, James, who is originally from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, has worked in international, independent, and public schools in Canada, the UK, Qatar, China, Austria, and the United States. James has been employed in a number of schools in a variety of roles, including as a Grade 6 to Grade 12 teacher of English language and English literature, a Head of Department, a College Counselor, an Academic Dean, and as an IB MYP Coordinator (in three previous schools). As an MYP Coordinator, James is passionate about and believes strongly that if implemented well, the IB PYP, MYP, DP, and CP are the best educational programmes in the world today as they prepare students to be inquiring, lifelong learners, well-prepared for the future with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for success and ready, as described in the International Baccalaureate Mission Statement, to ‘help to create a better and more peaceful world.’

James’ family (including his wife and two children) will be joining him when he moves to Dubai, and they are excited to do so, as they have lived in a variety of countries themselves, and Dubai is well-known as an international city where many people from around the world choose to visit and relocate to. Finally, James is very much looking forward to serving as the IB Middle Years Programme Coordinator at GWA next year and becoming a member of the GEMS World Academy - Dubai community, beginning in August 2021.
