Team Spotlight - Kieran Walsh

Secondary Design Teacher

Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, I studied Design at Manchester University and then Staffordshire Univerity in the UK, graduating with a first class Honours Degree in Design. After five years of gaining invaluable experience in multiple design and manufacturing fields, and periods of travelling internationally, I began my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Bath Spa University in Design Technology. After graduating from my teacher training, I worked in a high achieving secondary college with a Technology specialism in Wiltshire, UK, for 7 years. My wife and I made the move to Dubai in 2008 when I started working in the then newly opened GEMS World Academy - Dubai. I chose to make the move from the British Curriculum to the IB, as I was interested in its focus on inquiry based learning and holistic approach to education. Over the last 12 years I have learnt a lot as an IB educator, and gained invaluable experience working in the Academy’s multicultural and international environment.

Since joining the Academy, I have set up and led both the MYP and DP Design programmes in which our students have continually experienced an innovative and dynamic environment. Students have gained skills in a wide range of projects gaining technical skills, knowledge, and the importance of good design being a driver for positive social change. Our department’s committed staff and experience, along with our world class facilities, have enabled many of our students to progress on to some of the world’s leading Design and Engineering universities. I look forward to many more years to come, here at GEMS World Academy – Dubai.
