About
Middle Years Programme

Students learn best when connected to their lives and the world. Global contexts help explore identity, global challenges, and international-mindedness.
Conceptual Understanding
Big ideas within subjects help MYP students explore issues of personal, local, and global significance.
Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills
ATL skills encourage independent learning and applying knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.
Service as Action
Students apply classroom learning in real-world settings, making a positive impact on the community and environment. Service as action is key in the MYP community project.
The Personal Project
Students create an independent project that showcases their learning and passion, starting in Grade 9 and completing it in Grade 10.

Middle Years Curriculum
GWA follows the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), designed for students in Grades 6–10. It supports their rapid development while nurturing inquiry, critical thinking, and creativity. The MYP builds a strong academic foundation and prepares students for the IB Diploma Programme.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
Design
Design and technology have transformed society, impacting how we access information, communicate, and solve problems. The MYP Design challenges students to apply creative and practical-thinking skills to solve design problems. It also encourages exploration of design's historical and modern context.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
Individuals and Societies
The MYP Individuals and Societies subject group covers humanities and social sciences, fostering respect and understanding of the world. It equips students with skills to explore historical, geographical, political, social, economic, and cultural factors that impact individuals, societies, and environments.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
Language Acquisition
The ability to communicate in multiple languages is key to international education and promotes intercultural understanding, central to the IB’s mission. In the MYP, language study helps students explore language features, processes, culture, and the diverse ways of living, behaving, and viewing the world.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
Language and Literature
MYP language and literature courses equip students with linguistic, analytical and communicative skills that help to develop interdisciplinary understanding. Students develop skills in six domains—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and presenting—both independently and with others.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
Mathematics
The study of mathematics is essential in a balanced education, fostering a universal language, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. MYP mathematics and extended mathematics courses encourage both inquiry and application, helping students develop problem-solving techniques valuable beyond the classroom.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
Sciences
With inquiry at its core, the MYP sciences framework encourages students to independently and collaboratively investigate issues through research, observation, and experimentation. The curriculum connects science to everyday life, exploring its relationships with morality, ethics, culture, economics, politics, and the environment.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
Physical and Health Education
MYP physical and health education empowers students to value physical activity and make healthy life choices. It focuses on learning about and through physical activity, helping students develop ATL skills. This subject contributes to the IB learner profile, promoting individual and community health.
THE MYP CURRICULUM
The Arts
In MYP arts, students act as both artists and learners. By cultivating curiosity about themselves, others, and the world, they become effective inquirers and creative problem-solvers. Students create, perform, and present art to express feelings, ideas, and experiences, building on existing skills.
SKILLS AND PROJECTS
Contextual Learning
Students learn best when their learning experiences have context and are connected to their lives and the world that they have experienced. Using global contexts, MYP students explore human identity, global challenges and what it means to be internationally minded.
SKILLS AND PROJECTS
Conceptual Understanding
Concepts are big ideas that have relevance within specific disciplines and across subject areas. MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine knowledge holistically.
SKILLS AND PROJECTS
Service as Action
Action and service are core values in the IB community. Students apply classroom learning to real-world contexts, demonstrating a commitment to service by positively impacting others and the environment. Service as action is integral to the programme, particularly in the MYP community project.
SKILLS AND PROJECTS
Personal Project
Each student develops an independent Personal Project, creating a unique and creative piece of work that reflects their knowledge, skills, and responsible action, centred around a passion of their choice. GEMS World Academy – Dubai students begin the project in Grade 9 and complete it in Grade 10.
The MYP+
What makes the Academy's Middle Years Programme special? We do not only prepare students for their next academic challenge, whether this be at IB Diploma level or another academic system (e.g. ‘A’ Levels or American Common Core), but also encourage and develop students’ curiosity and skills in all aspects of life, from their own interests and hobbies, to using a strong entrepreneurial mindset to find solutions, and to become active and successful members of their local and global communities.
Entrepreneurship
and The Hub
GEMS World Academy - Dubai opened its entrepreneurship HUB in 2019, and has already had huge numbers of students enrolled in a wide variety of experiences.
These include in school (and virtual) workshops with local and global entrepreneurs, Samsung innovators, gaming and coding competitions, and our own GEMS World Academy - Dubai Social Impact Challenge.
The HUB is continuously developing its programs in line with the MYP curriculum and its Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, to create opportunities for students to challenge themselves, and to develop innovative projects beyond their classroom learning.
The Social
Impact Challenge
The Social Impact Challenge (Large Scale Inquiry) is an annual event in which students from Grade 6 to Grade 9 work together in mixed teams to solve a specific challenge. Students are tasked with coming up with an impactful, sustainable and scalable solution, service or product to tackle this challenge, and to establish a realistic company to provide or manufacture the product.
This Challenge utilises both the IB inquiry cycle and its EIE pillars, helping students to build on their PYPX in Grade 5, and continue to develop the skills required for success in their Personal Projects in Grade 10.
Enrichment
Programme
GEMS World Academy – Dubai offers an extensive weekly programme of enrichment opportunities, with hundreds of activities taking place each day. These are broadly divided between those led by Academy staff and those delivered by external providers, the latter of which may involve an additional cost. Our After-School Activities (ASA) Programme runs across three sessions throughout the academic year—one per term—with each session typically lasting for eight weeks, giving students the chance to explore interests and develop new skills.
Teaching and
Learning
in the MYP
Teaching and learning in the MYP at GEMS World Academy - Dubai is based in the understanding that students learn best when the learning is:
- Engaging, challenging, rigorous, relevant and significant
- Collaborative
- Appropriately supported with feedback
- Understood and accommodated for students with diverse needs
- Structured so students feel secure and that their ideas are valued and respect
- Based on how students "learn best" and supports the development of new thoughts, ideas and connections between other disciplines
frequently asked
questions
What is the Middle Years Programme?
The MYP is designed for students aged 11 to 16.
It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasises intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement—essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. It builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Career Related Programme (CP).
What are the advantages of an IB education?
- IB World Schools (the only schools authorized to offer IB programmes) are subject to a strict accreditation process monitored by the IB, ensuring that schools provide a high-quality education.
- IB teaching methods and curriculums are research- based and draw from the best educational practices from systems around the world.
- IB teachers are required to participate in many professional development opportunities to continually promote their awareness of current educational practices and new thinking.
- IB programmes are recognised internationally and ease the educational transition of mobile students so that their education is not adversely affected if their families relocate.
Do IB teachers receive special training?
All MYP teachers receive professional development in the IB’s approaches to teaching and approaches to learning from certified IB workshop leaders. This is a requirement for IB World Schools implementing the MYP.
