Where academic excellence meets a world of opportunities beyond the classroom.

About
THE IB

GEMS World Academy – Dubai believes the International Baccalaureate (IB) offers the best educational experience available today. As the gold standard in international education, it prepares students for top universities and beyond. More than a qualification, the IB promotes strong values and global leadership.

At the Academy, students enjoy a broad and enriching IB experience. They study a range of subjects while developing expertise in areas of personal interest. Through engaging, inquiry-led teaching, students become lifelong, interdisciplinary learners.

We are authorised to deliver the PYP, MYP, DP and CP, and accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Our IB Core integrates service, critical thinking and reflection, nurturing skills beyond academics. As the UAE’s strongest Mathematics academy, we exceed global IB Diploma results. Graduates gain entry to top universities and thrive in innovation and entrepreneurship.

frequently asked
questions

What are the advantages of an IB education?
  • IB World Schools (the only schools authorised to offer IB programmes) are subject to a strict accreditation process monitored by the IB, ensuring that academies provide a high-quality education
  • IB teaching methods and curriculums are research-based and draw from the best educational practices from systems around the world
  • IB teachers are required to participate in many professional development opportunities to continually promote their awareness of current educational practices and new thinking
  • IB students develop a sense of the world around them and their responsibility to it
  • IB programmes are recognised internationally and ease the educational transitions of mobile students so that their education is not adversely affected if their families relocate
Do IB teachers receive special training?

All teachers receive professional development in IB’s approaches to teaching and learning from certified IB workshop leaders. This is a requirement for IB World Schools implementing the PYP, MYP, IBDP and IBCP.

How many subjects do IB DP students need to study?

Full Diploma Programme students study six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5 (see the curriculum model), thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, humanities, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5. Higher Level subjects include a range of modules to allow students to study the course in more detail and develop more specialised knowledge. In addition, students study the IB Core, which provides a unique opportunity for students to broaden their skills and experience.

What is the IB CP ‘Core’?

In addition to the DP subjects and BTEC Diploma selected, IB CP students complete four ‘Core’ requirements:

Service Learning – developing new skills and becoming more open-minded through volunteering in the local and international community.

Personal and Professional Skills (PPS) – developing employability skills through a series of projects.

Reflective Project – reflecting on an ethical issue relating to a student’s chosen field of study and producing a degree-level piece of work.

Language Development – studying a foreign language through project-based work.
