Welcome to
Nursery Years

Your child’s first steps towards an IB continuum education through a unique Reggio-Inspired Approach.

About
Nursery

The GEMS World Academy - Dubai (GWA) Nursery offers a warm, nurturing environment for your child’s formative years. Research shows that early learning improves social skills, school achievement, and attention spans. Our IB-trained teachers have 32 years of combined experience. We provide natural spaces and resources for students to collaborate and engage in learning activities that stimulate their interests. We offer a Reggio Emilia-inspired programme for children aged 2-3, leading to the IB programme from age 3. Located within our Early Childhood spaces, the nursery provides a small school experience within a larger setting. The GWA Nursery enriches social development, offering choice from age 3. We support children who need diaper changes and toilet training, and for those showing greater independence, they can transition into the IB pre-kindergarten programme.

Ms Louna Van Der Merwe

Nursery Manager

Louna van der Merwe is an Early Years teacher with over 14 years of experience. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Louna moved to Dubai in 2014 to teach Foundation Stage at a British Curriculum School and joined GEMS World Academy in 2020 as Nursery Manager. Her classroom environment encourages students to direct their own learning through play. Louna believes the classroom is a second teacher, fostering learning through open-ended, relationship-driven activities. Her aim is to inspire every child to reach their full potential. Outside of teaching, Louna enjoys reading, traveling, spending time with her family, and working alongside her husband in their falconry business, where they rehabilitate and train birds of prey.

Reggio-Inspired
Approach

We blend the modern British EYFS curriculum with an IB and Reggio Emilia-inspired approach to create enriching opportunities for every child to play, learn, and explore. Rooted in the belief that every child is a capable, curious learner, the Reggio philosophy values children as natural researchers with unique ideas, interests, and voices. This approach nurtures a lifelong love of learning, encouraging independence, creativity, and a readiness to embrace new challenges.

Home away
from home

Our nursery is a warm, nurturing environment that feels like a home away from home. We create a safe and welcoming space where each child is known, valued, and supported. With caring educators, cosy classrooms, and engaging play-based learning, we help our youngest learners feel secure and confident as they explore the world around them. Each day is filled with laughter, discovery, and the gentle guidance needed to build strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Inclusive
Learning
Environment

Each class has a teacher and two Teaching Assistants throughout the year. During the first two weeks, there is no formal planning as the focus is on helping children transition smoothly into Nursery. We support them as they settle into their new environment and daily routines. In the first week, we encourage early pick-up times to help build their confidence and ease the separation process from parents and carers in a gentle, nurturing way.
