Mr Nick Makin

Assistant Principal Secondary – Personal Development, Welfare, and Behaviour

Nick Makin joined GEMS World Academy - Dubai as the Assistant Principal for Personal Development, Welfare, and Behaviour from his previous role as Head of Senior School at a School in Muscat, Oman. As an experienced pastoral leader, Nick is very mindful of the academic, social and emotional development of young learners, as well as fostering an appreciation for life skills in preparation for entering the adult world. As an advocate for positive mental health strategies and lifelong learning, he regularly promotes these messages through whole school initiatives, student assemblies and cross-curricular programmes. Nick obtained his BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Cumbria, UK. He brings many years of leadership experience from the UK, Oman and UAE.

Nick Makin is Assistant Principal for Personal Development, Welfare, and Behaviour at GWA. In his previous role, he served as Head of Senior School at a British international school in Muscat, Oman. He brings 10 years teaching, and seven years leadership experience in the UK, Oman and UAE. As an experienced pastoral leader, Nick is very mindful of the academic, social and emotional development of young learners. As an advocate for positive mental health advice and strategies, he regularly promotes this message during student assemblies, cross-curricular programmes and parent workshops focusing on mindfulness, anxiety control and healthy lifestyles.

Nick's career highlights include raising over 25,000 AED for a charity providing sports equipment to underprivileged African villages, nurturing student athletes to reach elite level in their respective sports, and guiding students to achieve the world's highest marks in academic PE and Sport Science. Nick has played football at a high level, representing ESFA in national competitions, as well as coaching and refereeing at Manchester City FC Academy. In studying BSc Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Cumbria, UK, Nick will be able to offer his knowledge to all GWA students and athletes, both in the classroom and on the sports field. He is looking forward to bringing his expertise to GWA and positively contributing to the whole school community.
